AFReG’s New Devotional Series

What a glorious thought! This is not a prophetic declaration born of hypothetical imagination, but one anchored in the immutable Word of God. Scripture assures us that the Lord watches over His Word to accomplish it, and that “no word from God will ever fail” (Luke 1:37). And isn’t this very much in rhythm with “I See a New Africa”? We are privileged to live in an extraordinary time when knowledge is accelerating at an unprecedented pace. Through digital technology, information can reach virtually every corner of the globe within moments. Yet we must ask: How much of this knowledge points people to the knowledge of the glory of the Lord? There are countless competing voices, ideas, and interests. Much of what is being amplified in our world is disconnected from, and at times directly opposed to, the knowledge of God. This presents us with both a challenge and an opportunity. Through these devotionals, we have an opportunity to amplify the Word of God, helping people interpret the realities of our times through the lens of Scripture and encouraging them to live out their faith in meaningful and practical ways. The new series builds on our previous devotional series, Changing as We Behold Him, based on 2 Corinthians 3:18 and Hebrews 12:1–3. We will continue to draw lessons from Jesus’ life; the ultimate pattern for leadership, and the lives of men and women in Scripture who exemplified godly character and values. We will also reflect on contemporary issues confronting our continent and our world, considering how Scripture calls us to respond.

Nehemiah’s Character

It is popularly known that three things form the pillars of leadership: calling, competence, and character. In Nehemiah’s case, it is clear he had a divine calling. This is evident in his immediate and urgent response to his brother Hanani’s troubling news about the shameful state of Jerusalem and the returned exiles. That call motivated
